Hello! I hope you have all had a good weekend!
The weather is still scorching over here and this is set to continue for the foreseeable future… I foresee my future will consist of me continuing to sit in front of an air conditioner or fan!
For those of you in Australia keep cool and stay out of the sun! Make sure you provide lots of fresh water and adequate shade/cool areas for your pets, too. I saw the stories about the bushfires in Tasmania which have been devastating; in Australia at this time of year we can get bush fires in which large amounts of rural (and sometimes semi rural – so quite close to cities!) land and property is destroyed by fire… Hopefully there won’t be too many more fires this summer but there are no guarantees.
Stay safe!

Given the hot weather you might be surprised about today’s post, but let’s face it, a good hair straightener (or “flat iron”) is useful all year round. Not only can you use straighteners to get sleek looks; there are a number of great tutorials online (e.g. by Violet Le Beaux) which show you how to use to them to create curls and waves too!
My hair is naturally wavy, which I hate, so you won’t catch me going for curly looks! (Curls and waves make my face look really wide.) However, I have had a straightener for some years because I love the way my hair looks when dead straight.
Since mid December I have been road testing the Karmin Salon Pro G3 Tourmaline Hair Straightener* (a mouthful, huh?!
I’ll be calling it the “Salon Pro G3” for short) and so I would like to share my thoughts on this one.
Price: It is curently selling at $129.95 USD ($123.73 AUD using today’s exchange rates).
Where can I get it? Hair Products Pro – you can jump to a direct link to the product on Hair Products Pro here.
I hadn’t heard of Karmin until I had the chance to trial this product. Karmin are a Canadian company that specialises in developing and manufacturing quality hair styling products and hairdressing tools, and have been in business for some years. (You can find their official site over here.)
What is special about Salon Pro G3 is that, unlike many others on the market, it has pure tourmaline ceramic plates, not just a tourmaline coating. This means that the properties of the tourmaline will last for the life of the straightener, not just until the plates get scratched or otherwise damaged. The ceramic part of the plates delivers the infa-red heat which helps style and set your look, but the tourmaline provides negative ions which help tame the frizzies (woohoo I need this!
). Apparently the negative ions are also good for your hair in general, which is a bonus!
What does it look like?
As you can see, I have road tested the white coloured model but it also comes in black and pink, like so (images courtesy hairproductspro.com):

What did I think?
The Salon Pro G3 is made for the North American market, so ensure you have a US to Australian adaptor handy (or for your particular country where appropriate)! You can get them really cheap on eBay. You don’t have to worry about issues with voltage as the straightener is designed for use between 100-240v. Phew!
Also, the temperatures are in Fahrenheit (F) so make sure you Google up a Fahrenheit to Celsius (C) calculator before you start to use it (if you are in Australia or another country where the C system is used)! These days you can get free apps for your phone or iPad/tablet that make this even easier. In this way you will be sure of what you’re doing, as to optimally preserve the health of your hair you want to use the lowest heat possible that will still effectively style the hair.
I think the packaging is really nice – super sleek! I also like the protective storage case it comes in, which is what you can see in the photo below. This would be very handy when travelling.
I was very impressed with how quickly it heats up compared to my other big brand straightener. It was ready in only a few seconds! No more waiting around or multitasking whilst waiting for it to be ready (with my other one I typically switch it on and then do my makeup, and then come back to do my hair).
It is very smooth to use and glides through the hair. I always use a heat protectant spray which I suppose helps to an extent but I have noticed that it glides much more smoothly than my other straightener. It actually makes the process of straightening my hair faster – even though the plates are slightly smaller – I’m happy and impressed with that!
I only straighten my hair for special occasions these days, as I don’t have enough time in the mornings on work days, but thanks to Karmin my other straightener has been retired to my “spares” (I tend to keep a spare of things like useful electronics, an old mobile phone, etc as backup should something break down). I’m looking forward to my next big day or night out in which I can use the Salon Pro G3 again!
Beautiful rating (using the current SALE price) 10/10 – quality 5/5, value 5/5.

Haha, I’d probably get so confused mentally converting the temperature and fry my hair.
I really do need to buy a straightener, though. I always steal my sister’s.

Lol!
they are handy products to have; my retired one is a Vidal Sassoon which isn’t too bad and was under $50 @ the time!
Vidal Sassoon, eh? I trust them. Haha. I was given a VS blowdryer for my 16th birthday and it’s still running smoothly.

Lol but yes they last for agggggges! Good value in that sense. As my straightener is a few years old though, the technology seems to have really improved.
This looks fantastic! I have a GHD which is about 5 years old that I never use because it only has one temperature. I’m trying to be kinder to my hair and its just too hot and damaging.
Hi Amy; it’s worth it!
